Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF)
SELF is a low-interest student loan administered by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education available to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at least half time in a degree or certificate program. You must have a creditworthy co-signer to receive this loan. You must make quarterly interest payments on this loan while you are in school.
If you are an eligible undergraduate and you have previously borrowed a SELF loan, you will be offered a SELF loan on your eFAAN. If you accept your SELF offer, you will be directed to the online SELF application to apply for the loan.
If you have not previously borrowed a SELF loan, but would like to request one, you may do so by completing the Student Loan Supplement form available at Forms Online or for pickup at the Student Services Center. You may also send an e-mail to helpingu@umn.edu that includes your student ID number and the amount of SELF loan for which you would like to apply.
If you are a graduate or professional school student, you may request a SELF loan by completing both the FAFSA and the Student Loan Supplement form and following the steps described in the previous paragraph.
Promissory note required
If you accept a SELF loan, you will be required to complete online SELF counseling as well as an online SELF application. You, the student, must first complete the online application. You will be able to sign the promissory note electronically. Your co-signer can also sign the promissory note electronically.
