Outside organizations are a significant source of gift aid. To successfully tap the money available, you must conduct your own search to identify potential funds suited to your career, background, and other individual criteria. Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago Scholarship

Amount: varies

Approximately $500,000 is available for Jewish students who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers, and are in need of financial assistance for full-time academic programs primarily in the helping professions.

Criteria for consideration

Academic requirements include:

  • Graduate-level enrollment in a helping profession program, such as medicine, human services, the rabbinate, or Jewish communal service; or,
  • Undergraduate enrollment in a program requiring no post-graduate education for employment, such as education or nursing; or,
  • Undergraduate enrollment in mathematics, engineering, other sciences, law, or performing/fine arts.

Applicants must be residents of the greater Chicago metropolitan area, or in some cases, Cook County, Ill., or Northwest Indiana. Refugees or asylees are encouraged to apply, as citizenship is not a prerequisite.

Jewish Vocational Service administers the scholarship program and personally interviews all applicants before April 20, 2012 at one of its many offices throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.

Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship, U. S. Department of Defense (DoD)

Amount: Approximately 300 awards, that include:

  • full tuition and education related fees (meal plans, housing, or parking excluded)
  • cash awards
    • $25,000 for undergraduates
    • $33,000 for masters candidates
    • $36,300-$41,800 for doctoral candidates
  • $1,000 book allowance/academic year
  • health insurance reimbursement allowance up to $1,200/calendar year
  • paid summer internship for multi-year participants
  • internship travel expenses

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • be U.S. citizens;
  • be 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2012;
  • Graduate students can be either currently enrolled in, accepted by, or awaiting notiification of acceptance into in a regionally accredited U. S. college or university for the fall 2012 term;
  • Undergraduate students must be currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U. S. college or university and have a high school diploma/GED. (Current high school students are not eligible to apply);
  • be students in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application);
  • be pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in a wide range of technical areas, including engineering, physics, chemistry,bioilogy, brain and cogitive sciences, and mathemtics (See list at About SMART);
  • be able to participate in a summer internships at DoD laboratories;
  • be willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Army, Navy, Air Force or the DoD for a period equal to the time the program paid for their education;
  • be able to obtain a DoD security clearance.

Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Foundation Twin Cities Scholarships

Amount: Two $1,000 awards

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • must be undergraduates or graduate students in energy engineering or energy management in an accredited college or university .

Application must include:

  • a personal recommendation from a faculty member of the school the student is attending that describes the student's academic standing, character, and financial need;
  • a current transcript;
  • a 50-100 word statement on reason for choosing to study energy engineering or energy management.

Minnesota Association of Public Accountants (MAPA) Scholarship

Amount: $500

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • be undergraduate students entering their junior year and majoring in accounting with the intention to practice in the field of public accounting;
  • have a minimum 2.5 GPA;
  • be a U.S. citizen and Minnesota resident.

Robbinsdale Association of Retired Educators (RARE) Education Scholarship

Amount: $1,000 or more depending on yearly funds. Last year, five scholarships of $1,400 were awarded from a list of 10 applicants

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • have or has had a connection with Independent School District 281 (Robbinsdale), preferably as a 281 graduate, present 281 teacher, or current resident.
  • fit at least one of the following categories:
    • a student who has completed two years of college by September 2012 with plans to become a teacher;
    • an individual who wishes to make a career change within education;
    • a teacher wishing to change teaching fields.

Application must include:

  • short autobiographical essay including educational goals and occupation experiences;
  • transcript of credits;
  • planned program of study;
  • a one-paragraph statement describing financial need;
  • any additional information deemed important to your situation.

Note: Candidates will be contacted of the committee decision by mail at the end of May. Recipients will be expected to attend a RARE luncheon to accept the award.

Evelyn Lenander Education Scholarship

Amount: up to $2,500

Criteria for consideration

Preference given to permanent residents living with a 25-mile radius of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, extending to students from central Minnesota.

Applicants must:

  • have completed two full years of college;
  • be currently accepted into a degree program in elementary education;
  • be permanent residents of Minnesota;
  • maintain at least a 3.00 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Minnesota Heart Research Scholarships,

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • preferably be enrolled in the transportation field;
  • be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university as graduate students or undergraduates with at least sophomore student status;

Amount: $1,000 to $2,000

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • preferably be non-freshmen enrolled in one of the following programs:
    • landscape architecture
    • horticulture
    • botany
    • ecological restoration
    • garden history and design
    • urban forestry
    • environmental science

  • have a strong interest and commitment to working in the industry.

    • two letters of recommendation from teachers and/or employers;

    • a statement from the student explaining career goals, interest in the industry, and reasons for applying for the scholarship.

Criteria for consideration

Applicants must:

  • be affiliated with the footwear, leather or allied industries as employees (at least 500 working hours during the year prior to January 1), or the students' parent has employment in these industries, for a minimum of two years prior to applying;
  • be pursuing a footwear design majors, or have footwear design as a component of their majors;
  • a U. S. citizen, or eligible non-citizen, with demonstrated need, academic ability, and personal promise.

  • $3,000/year; $15,000 lifetime maximum for part-time employees
