Gaining Acceptance to a Closed Course
The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has a wait listing as part of the Web enrollment system. Students are eligible to wait list for courses offered through selected departments as indicated by "Wait List available" appearing next to the class in the Class Schedule or Class Search.
For courses not using the Web wait list, you should first go to the department offering the course, where you may be put on a manual waiting list or be referred to the instructor for permission to register. Attend the first class meeting if you are on a waiting list or need the instructor's permission to see if more students will be admitted. To register for a closed course you must have a class permission number (magic number) from the instructor. All class permission numbers expire at the end of the second week of classes. After the second week you must go to your college office for electronic approval.
The following departments have provided One Stop with written procedures for attempting to register in a closed class for their department.
Chemistry
Over the summer, check the Web registration system as some lab seats become available for CHEM 1011, 1017, 1021, 1022, and 2311 when students drop or change sections.
During the first week of classes, meet outside the lab doors at the start of each lab you are available to attend for the semester. (See the class schedule or web for times and lab location for specific courses.)
Chemistry personnel will take attendance on the first day of each lab period. Students who are present outside the lab doors will be added to the lab as space is available. If there are more students needing a particular lab than
spaces available, they will do a lottery drawing until all spaces are filled. You will begin working in a lab
immediately upon admission.
If you are not admitted into one specific lab time, continue to show up for each lab time you are able to throughout
the first week of classes until you are admitted or informed that all labs are full.
Once you have been assigned a lab section, you will be given a permission number to officially register for the course. This should be done by the end of the first week of the semester. Remember, being admitted into a lab
section does not officially register you for the class.
Once you are admitted into a lab section, and “checked in” to a lab drawer, you will not be allowed to change lab sections; therefore, please choose your lab time carefully.
If you are already registered, and wish to “switch” to a different section, this is possible if you have NOT already “checked in” to a lab drawer. You should follow the same instructions in 1-3 above. NOTE: Priority will be given to students who are not already registered for a lab section. If you are waiting outside the lab doors for a possible seat and you’re already registered for another section, you will be given second priority.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the staff in 115 Smith Hall at 612-624-0026. NOTE: The chemistry department follows the University’s “mandatory attendance rule.” Students who do not arrive within the first 15 minutes of when their first lab period will be crossed off the lab list, and will need to officially cancel their
registration.
Open spaces created by students not attending the first lab period will then be given to those students who still need the course using the above stated procedure.
Physics
Registration for Physics courses is done online or by processing a Course Request Form at 200 Fraser Hall. Students wishing to register for Physics Introductory courses are advised to watch the web continuously. Openings usually appear due to student cancellations, additional seats added, or reserved seats returned to general registration. Open seats will appear on the web through the second week of classes. Students may attend the first week of lectures while still watching for openings on the web. Students not registered may not attend lab or discussion sections. TAs will not give registration permission.
Please note, all Physics Introductory courses are offered spring semester, 2009.
Math
Registration policies are available on the Department of Math Web site.
Day and Evening Classes
Registration policies are available on the Department of Math Web site: math.umn.edu/undergrad/registration/.
Questions regarding entrance into any math class should be addressed to ugrad@math.umn.edu. If you are requesting a permission number, you must be able to register to the class at the time you make the request, since the permission number will have a limited amount of time before it will become inactive. If you do not have access to email, check with the staff in the Math Undergraduate Office in Vincent 115 regarding what procedure to follow.
If you are requesting a permission number, be sure to include the following information with your request; otherwise, the reply to your request for a permission number will be: Please provide the following information.
1) Student Name and U of M ID number (if you have one)
2) For each section of course, you must include:
a) Course Number (Ex.: Math 1271)
b) Section Number (Ex.: 012)
c) Class number (5-digit Ex.: 12345)
d) Reason for requesting a permission number. (Do not say only that the section is closed.)
3) If you can provide more than one section of a popular class that you would fit your schedule, you will increase your likelihood of success in receiving a permission number.
Enrollment summaries may be checked if the reason you have stated for requesting a permission number is a time conflict with another class. If a student has not demonstrated that he/she cannot do an open section, that student will be asked to register to an open section.
Response concerning the request for entrance into a closed section will come through email. If the student has demonstrated that it is impossible to do an open section, the student will either receive a permission number or be notified that a permission number cannot be given. Staff will try to respond to your request for a permission number within 48 hours, but this is not always possible. If you have not received an email reply within 5 days, please email ugrad@math.umn.edu asking about your request.

Writing Studies
For WRIT 3562W, students should carefully monitor the registration and schedule of classes on the One Stop web site, onestop.umn.edu. Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change sections. If seats do not become available, students should attend the first class meeting to request a permission number directly from the instructor. An instructor may request that permission number(s) be issued to student(s) at the end of the first class meeting, if seats are available. Or, the instructor may ask interested students to return for a second class meeting for a final decision. Permission numbers are emailed to students and must be used immediately. Generally, instructors do not admit students over the enrollment cap due to space and equipment limitations. All decisions regarding registration for a closed class is at the discretion of the instructor. The department only issues permission numbers at the request of an instructor.

Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change lab sections. If you need a closed section, add your name to the wait-listed section. If space becomes available in the wait-listed section you selected, you will be sent a permission number via e-mail.
