Change your Major, College, or Add a Second Undergraduate Degree Program

These three changes to your academic plan may vary per college or department. Follow the directions and links below to complete the process that best fits your academic plan. Be sure to check with your academic adviser!

Change or add a major Change college or campus Add a Second Undergraduate Degree

Change or add a major within your current college

Students may change from one major to another or declare additional majors and minors by following these steps for declaring a major.

  1. Talk to your academic adviser or your college's career services professionals to help clarify your goals

  2. Each college at the University has their own policies and procedures for changing majors. Some majors are competitive and require an application or portfolio review.

Add a second major in another college

Some colleges and programs allow you to complete one of their majors while you are admitted into another UMTC college. Contact an adviser in the prospective major for more information.

Change college or campus

To transfer from one college or campus to another within the University of Minnesota you must meet the admissions requirements of the college you wish to attend. There may be specific requirements for particular majors within each college.
  1. Investigate College or department transfer requirements
  2. Talk to your academic adviser
    • Note: If you are transferring between campuses of the University of Minnesota (i.e., Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester, Twin Cities), review this information about the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum.

  3. Fill out the Application Form
  4. Application for Undergraduate Change of College

Any student who wishes to transfer from one college of the University to another must submit a completed Application for Undergraduate Change of College to a One Stop Student Services Center. Do not use this form to change a major or add a second major in another college--contact your college office for more information.

  5. Make sure you meet the college deadlines

Add a second undergraduate degree program

An additional degree program is an undergraduate degree program that is different from the one you have completed or will be completing at the University of Minnesota. For example, use this process if you are interested in pursuing a B.A. degree after completing a B.S. degree.

Apply for admission to an additional undergraduate degree program only if you intend to complete all degree, major, and coursework requirements for the additional degree. Do not use this process if you are changing or adding a major.

Timing of this process follows the College Deadlines listed below (same as for Change of College).

Change of College deadlines

These dates are for undergraduate majors, and are not applicable to programs in the Graduate School. If the college in which you are interested is not listed below, contact that college office for specific information.
