Graduate non-degree registration for spring 2007
Many students will soon be contacting the University
regarding registering as non-degree seeking students to earn graduate
credit. Typically, these students have been admitted for a future
semester or are considering applying to a graduate program and want to
take classes that will transfer once admitted.
Starting December 1, 2006, students interested in
attending classes spring 2007 should submit a
Request for Graduate
Credit form to the department(s) offering the course(s). If the
department's Director of Graduate Studies or their designee approves
the course(s) for graduate credit, the form is signed and is forwarded
by the department to: One Stop Student Services, 219 9th Ave S.,
Minneapolis, MN 55455-0427. This form can also be faxed to 612-626-9129.
Questions concerning this registration option can be
directed to Amy Morrisey at morri107@umn.edu or Alison
Frank-Quick at
fran0332@umn.edu.
Beyond the yellow ribbon
On November 9, student services staff on the Twin
Cities campus were invited to learn about how they can better serve
student-veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. These
returning soldiers are going to "stretch the social fabric of
Minnesota," said Chaplain Major John Morris as he addressed a group of
more than 120 participants. In March 2007, 3,000 reserve National Guard
and Army
members will return to their homes in Minnesota, and many of these
individuals will return to--and in some cases begin--their studies.
The
challenges faced by student-veterans are unique to their experiences in
combat. For example, student-veterans leave an environment in which
they cannot
trust their surroundings, and therefore may have difficulties trusting
the large bureaucracy of the University. This distrust
may prevent some student-veterans from ever asking for help when they
need it most. "The healthiest reintegration happens in the community,
not in
a clinic," advised Chaplain Major Morris, and he asked the group to
remember the following important points to shape a positive experience
for student-veterans as they return to campus:
-- Don't ask about combat experience;
-- Listen with compassion;
-- Show respect for student veterans' service;
-- Connect student veterans with appropriate resources;
-- Consider putting a map of Iraq and Afghanistan in your office if you
have regular contact with student-veterans.
Additional reintegration trainings may be offered in
the future. For more information, contact Mary Koskan at m-kosk@umn.edu.
