University volunteers help families complete the financial aid application

More than 75 University of Minnesota staff from 12 departments volunteered to assist low-income families and those who have no college-going tradition complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) during the second annual Minnesota College Goal Sunday on February 11, 2007.

“The University’s support of this program reflects a shared determination to open doors of educational opportunity. In an era of steadily increasing college costs, we must continue to spread the word that financial aid is available, and we must do everything we can to help students through the sometimes overwhelming financial aid application process.” says Judy Swanson, Academic Support Resources’ outreach coordinator and co-chair of the College Goal Sunday steering committee.

Volunteers from the Office of Admissions, One Stop Student Services, the Office of Student Finance, the Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence, The Graduate School, the College of Education and Human Development, the College of Design, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, the Institute of Technology, Upward Bound, the College of Biological Sciences, and International Student and Scholar Services received FAFSA training prior to the event.Information on Minnesota College Goal Sunday is available at www.mncollegegoalsunday.org.
