Workshop: "Let's Go . . . Beyond the Yellow Ribbon"
Thousands of combat veterans will
be returning to communities around Minnesota in the next six months.
The University of Minnesota has a responsibility to help these veterans
come back to school and succeed.
Please join your colleagues for
this important and enriching presentation:
Tuesday, March 27, 2007
1:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Bell Museum Auditorium
Chaplain Major John Morris and a
student veteran panel will focus on how we can help address the needs
of returning combat veterans and the difficulties they may face as they
return home. The presenters will describe the challenges of
reintegrating into society and the impact this has on a soldier's
entire family. You can listen to Chaplain Major Morris' recent
appearance on Minnesota Public Radio's Midmorning.
Refreshments will be served.

University volunteers help families complete the financial aid
application
More than 75 University of
Minnesota staff from 12 departments
volunteered to assist low-income families and those who have no
college-going
tradition complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
during
the second annual Minnesota College Goal Sunday on February 11, 2007.
“The University’s
support of this program reflects a shared determination
to open doors of educational opportunity. In an era of steadily
increasing
college costs, we must continue to spread the word that financial aid
is
available, and we must do everything we can to help students through
the
sometimes overwhelming financial aid application process.” says Judy
Swanson, Academic
Support Resources’ outreach coordinator and co-chair of the College
Goal Sunday
steering committee.
Volunteers from the Office of
Admissions, One Stop Student
Services, the Office of Student Finance, the Multicultural Center for
Academic Excellence,
The Graduate School, the College of Education and Human Development,
the College
of Design, the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials
Science, the Institute
of Technology, Upward Bound, the College of Biological Sciences, and
International
Student and Scholar Services received FAFSA training prior to the event.Information
on Minnesota College Goal Sunday is available at www.mncollegegoalsunday.org.
Scholarship search and management
Academic
Support Resources is sponsoring the development of a campus-wide
undergraduate Scholarship Search and Management application. The goals
of the project are:
- to raise the profile of
departmental, unit-based, and collegiate scholarships on campus,
- to increase the consistency and reduce the burden of scholarship administration across campus,
- to improve reporting
accuracy, fund management, and tracking, and
- to make it easier for students to find and apply for the scholarships for which
they are eligible.
Fundamental to the
success of the project will be creating a system that assists units
with divergent awarding criteria. >After 6 months of consultation and process mapping, the project is taking shape. All scholarship administrators and scholarship granting units should be engaged in this project, as this tool will have a significant effect on your work. For more information about this project, contact Santiago Fernandez-Gimenez at ferna010@umn.edu.
