Wait list

The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has a wait listing as part of the Web enrollment system. You are eligible to wait list for courses offered through selected departments, as indicated by "Wait List available" appearing next to the class in the Class Schedule or Class Search.

Instructor permission

For courses not using the Web wait list, you should first go to the department offering the course, where you may be put on a manual waiting list or be referred to the instructor for permission to register. Attend the first class meeting if you are on a waiting list or need the instructor's permission to find out whether you can be admitted.

To register for a closed course you must have a class permission number from the instructor. All class permission numbers expire at the end of the second week of classes. After the second week you must go to your college office to be given online approval.

Special departmental procedures

The following departments have provided One Stop with written procedures for attempting to register in a closed class for their department.

Biology

Watch for openings in closed sections by going to the the Class Schedule link in the Registration section of the One Stop Web site for the following courses: BIOL 1001, 1002, 1009, 1105, 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2012. Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change lab sections. If you need a closed section, add your name to the wait-listed section. If space becomes available in the wait-listed section you selected, you will be sent a permission number via e-mail.

Chemistry

Over the summer, check the Web registration system as some lab seats become available for CHEM 1017, 1021, 1022, and 2311 when students drop or change sections.

For CHEM 1015, contact the Chemistry department at 612-624-0026 if the course is closed.

During the first week of classes, meet outside the lab doors at the start of each lab you are available to attend for the semester. (See the class schedule or web for times and lab location for specific courses.)

Chemistry personnel will take attendance on the first day of each lab period. If you are present outside the lab doors, you will be added to the lab as space is available. If there are more students who need a particular lab than
spaces available, a lottery drawing will be done until all spaces are filled. You will begin working in a lab immediately after admission.

If you are not admitted into one specific lab time, continue to show up for each lab time you are able to during the first week of classes until you are admitted or informed that all labs are full.

Once you have been assigned a lab section, you will be given a permission number to officially register for the course. You should register by the end of the first week of the semester. Remember, being admitted into a lab
section does not officially register you for the class.

Once you are admitted into a lab section, and “checked in” to a lab drawer, you will not be allowed to change lab sections; therefore, please choose your lab time carefully.

If you are already registered, and wish to “switch” to a different section, this is possible if you have NOT already “checked in” to a lab drawer. You should follow the same instructions in 1-3 above. NOTE: Priority will be given to students who are not already registered for a lab section. If you are waiting outside the lab doors for a possible seat and you’re already registered for another section, you will be given second priority.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the staff in 115 Smith Hall at 612-624-0026. NOTE: The chemistry department follows the University’s “mandatory attendance rule.” If you do not arrive within the first 15 minutes of the start of your first lab period, your name will be crossed off the lab list, and you will need to officially cancel your registration.

Open spaces created by students not attending the first lab period will then be given to those students who still need the course, using the above stated procedure.

Registration policies for fall semester 2009

General policies and procedures

If you are requesting a permission number: 1) you must have no time conflicts between either the lectures or the discussions of the math class you request and any other class for which you are already registered; and 2) you must be able to register for the class at the time you make the request, since the permission number will have a limited amount of time before it will expire.

If you do not have access to e-mail, check with the staff in the Math Undergraduate Office in Vincent 115 regarding what procedure to follow.

When requesting a permission number, you must include the following information (otherwise, your request will be delayed by a response that asks you to provide theinformation):

  1. Student name and University ID number (if you have one)
  2. For each section of course, you must include:
    • Course number (Ex.: Math 1271)
    • Section number (Ex.: 012)
    • Class number (5-digit Ex.: 12345)
    • Reason for requesting a permission number (Do not say only that the section is closed).
  3. If you can provide multiple sections of a popular class that would fit your schedule, you will increase your likelihood of receiving a permission number.

Enrollment summaries may be checked if the reason you have stated for requesting a permission number is a time conflict with another class. If you cannot demonstrate that you are unable to attend an open section, you will be asked to register for an open section.

You will receive an e-mail response to your request for entrance into a closed section. If you demonstrate that it is impossible to do an open section, you will either receive a permission number or be notified that a permission number cannot be given. Staff will try to respond to your request for a permission number within 48 hours, but this is not always possible. If you have not received an e-mail reply within five days, please e-mail ugrad@math.umn.edu to ask about your request.

Writing Studies

As fall 2009 sections of WRIT 1301 and 1401 fill up, you are encouraged to make use of the Freshman Full-Year Registration option by registering for a spring 2010 section. Nearly half of all First-Year Writing seats are available in the spring semester. For permission number requests for WRIT 1301 sections (other than sections for Non-native speakers, Access to Success, or CLA Freshman Interest Group sections), you should contact the course instructors. Unused reserve seats will be released in July or August in consultation with the reserving program and the College of Liberal Arts.

For WRIT 1301 and 3562W, you should carefully monitor the section status in the Class Schedule link in the Registration section of the One Stop Web site. Spaces may become available in closed sections when students drop or change sections. If seats do not become available, you should attend the first class meeting to request a permission number directly from the instructor. An instructor may request that permission number(s) be issued to you at the end of the first class meeting, if seats are available. Or, the instructor may ask you to return for a second class meeting for a final decision. A permission number will be e-mailed to you. You must use it immediately to register in the class; otherwise, the number will expire and be made available to another student.

Generally, Writing Studies instructors do not admit students over the enrollment cap due to space and equipment limitations. All decisions regarding registration for a closed class are at the discretion of the instructor. The department only issues permission numbers at the request of an instructor. If a closed 3562W section has a waitlist please add your name. If space becomes available, you will be sent a permission number via e-mail.
